Mavlid al-Nabi
Muslims in America and around the world celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed on March 9.(The muslim day begins at sunset the evening before)
On Mavlid al-Nabi, families get together. They talk about Muhammed's birth and his life. They remember what he did for people 14 centuries ago.
Mohammed was born in Mecca,Arabia, about 570 C.E.
His father had died before Mohammed was born. His mother died when he was six. His grandfather took care of him but soon died, too. Then his uncle took care of him. Mohammed became a merchant. He was kind to everyone, and helped poor people with problems. He lived a simple life and stayed away from doing any wrong things.
Mohammet began to hear the Angel Gabriel speaking to him. The angel said that he was speaking for Allah. Mohammed remembered the angel's words. Mohammed could not write. he asked others to write down the teachings from Allah
In the next 23 years, Mohammed continued to hear the voice of Gabriel. These teachings wee put together into the Qur'an.
Mohammed began to teach people about a new religion: Islam.
By the time Mohammed died most of the peoplein Arabia had converted to islam.
